Roy Gori

President & CEO

Roy Gori is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife, Canada’s largest insurance company, and one of the largest insurance and asset management companies in the world. 

Appointed in 2017, Roy’s tenure as CEO has been marked by the introduction of a clear strategy and values that build on Manulife’s strong foundations to include sharper focus on the customer and a shift to digital innovation, in line with the company’s mission to make customers’ decisions easier, and lives better.

Roy joined Manulife as President and Chief Executive Officer for Asia in 2015. In that role, he was responsible for operations in 12 markets across Asia, driving Manulife’s rapidly growing business in the region. Roy started his career at Citibank in 1989, where he held progressively senior roles and was finally responsible for the company’s Asia Pacific retail business, which included its insurance and wealth management business.

Roy holds a Bachelor of Economics and Finance from The University of New South Wales, and an MBA from the University of Technology, Sydney. He is both a member and on the Board of Directors of the Business Council of Canada, a member of the U.S. Business Council, a member of the Geneva Association, and a member of the Mayor of Shanghai’s International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council. A native Australian, Roy has worked and lived in Sydney, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong, and is now based in Toronto.

Marc Costantini

Global Head of Inforce Management

Marc Costantini is Global Head of Inforce Management, where he leads initiatives to improve the profitability and risk profile of Manulife’s inforce business.

Marc rejoined Manulife from Munich Re where he was President & CEO for Corporate Development, Strategy and Digital Solutions for the company’s North America Life & Health business. Prior to his current role, he served as EVP, Commercial and Government Markets for Guardian, where he drove continued growth of the company’s group employee benefits business after having initially been appointed as the company’s CFO in 2014.  As CFO he was responsible for all finance, accounting, tax, actuarial, risk, capital and treasury functions.

Having initially joined Manulife in 1990, Marc spent more than 23 years, holding a variety of executive leadership roles in Corporate Strategy, Corporate Development, Finance, and the operating businesses.

Marc graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor’s of Sciences degree.  He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.  Marc is originally from Montreal, Canada and has worked and lived in Canada, Germany and currently resides in Boston, MA. He’s a passionate supporter of Children’s causes, Alzheimer’s and Cancer research.

Steven Finch

Chief Actuary

Steve Finch is Manulife’s Chief Actuary, overseeing Actuarial, Risk and Life Reinsurance functions globally. He is also a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team and Global Leadership Team. 

Mr Finch celebrated 30-years with Manulife in 2022. Prior to his current role, he held the role of Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer at John Hancock where he was responsible for the overall financial management of the US operations of Manulife. Prior to this, he was the Executive Vice President and General Manager for John Hancock’s Life insurance business. In this role he was responsible for all aspects of the U.S. individual life insurance business including Sales, Distribution, Marketing, Product, Information Technology, New Business and Customer Service Operations and Finance.

Mr. Finch continues to play a key role coaching, developing, and recognizing the outstanding talent in our Finance and Actuarial functions at Manulife.

He is a graduate of Queen’s University and holds a B.ScH in Statistics. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

James D. Gallagher

General Counsel

 Jim Gallagher is General Counsel of Manulife overseeing the global law, compliance, government relations and corporate secretary functions. He is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team and Global Leadership Team.

 Prior to his current role Mr. Gallagher was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer for the US Division, John Hancock Financial. As General Counsel, he was responsible for John Hancock’s law and compliance operations. As Chief Administrative Officer, he was also responsible for other functions including John Hancock’s Government, Public and Community Relations as well as Brand Management and Sponsorship Marketing.

Before taking on this role in 2012, he had been Executive Vice President and Global Compliance Chief for Manulife since 2005. In that role, he managed the law and compliance staff responsible for an array of compliance requirements facing the company globally. Previously, Jim served as General Counsel to Manulife USA and was President of John Hancock Investment Trust. 

Before joining Manulife in Boston in 1994, Jim was Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Canadian Operations of Prudential Insurance Company of America and also served as Assistant General Counsel with Prudential at its Newark, NJ, headquarters.

Jim has served on the Board of Directors of John Hancock’s insurance companies. He was the founding President of One Fund Boston and also the founding Chair of the Compliance and Ethics Forum for Life Insurers. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and also a former Chair of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Charities of Boston. 

Jim graduated with a B.A in Political Science from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto and later earned a J.D from Ohio Northern University’s College of Law.

Scott Hartz

Chief Investment Officer

Scott Hartz is Chief Investment Officer for Manulife Financial Corporation and oversees all U.S., Canadian and Asian general account investments. Mr. Hartz is also the Chief Investment Officer for John Hancock Life Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Manulife. 

Manulife’s portfolio is composed of fixed income investments and non-fixed income investments. A hallmark of the investment group which Mr. Hartz leads is its expertise in private asset classes. Within fixed income, the group underwrites and originates private placement debt and commercial and agricultural mortgages. Within non-fixed income, the group originates and manages commercial real estate, timber, agriculture, infrastructure, oil & gas, private equity, and mezzanine investments.

Previously, Mr. Hartz oversaw all U.S. balance sheet investments for Manulife, a position he assumed in 2007. He was Senior Vice President and head of the Bond & Corporate Finance Group, overseeing all U.S. bond assets from 2004 to 2007.

Before Manulife acquired John Hancock in 2004, he had been lead portfolio manager for John Hancock’s general account since 1998. Mr. Hartz, who began his career with John Hancock in 1983, joined the Portfolio Management Group in 1990 with responsibilities including managing the derivatives book.

Mr. Hartz joined John Hancock in the retail life marketing support group as a rotation on the actuarial program. He joined the Investment Strategy Group in 1985 and was the asset/liability manager for the Retail Life Segments. He helped develop the Company’s use of financial futures for its hedging strategies, including managing and trading the futures’ book.

Mr. Hartz graduated from Colby College with a B.A. in Physics and Economics. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

Mr. Hartz is a former member of the Board of Directors of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and now serves as an investment consultant to Point32Health.

Rahim Hirji

Chief Auditor

Rahim Hirji leads Manulife’s internal audit function as Chief Auditor and Head of Advisory Services. Mr. Hirji has more than 25 years of experience with Manulife and is a member of the Company’s Executive Leadership Team and Global Leadership Team.

Prior to leading the audit function, Mr. Hirji was our Chief Risk Officer for more than 11 years, responsible for all matters of risk in our global insurance and wealth management businesses. Prior to that, he held various roles in the Company including Chief Financial Officer for our Canadian Segment, the Head of Manulife’s Global Asset Liability Management Operations, leading financial modelling of our mergers and acquisitions, and various other actuarial roles.

Mr. Hirji graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, the Society of Actuaries, and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Naveed Irshad

President & CEO, Manulife Canada

Naveed Irshad is President & CEO, Manulife Canada, where he leads the implementation of the company’s growth strategy across the Canadian market, where we’re focused on helping Canadians improve their financial, physical, and mental health.

He is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. Mr. Irshad has almost 30 years of industry experience and has a deep understanding of the global life insurance industry. Before becoming Manulife Canada’s CEO, Naveed was Global Head of Inforce Management and Head of our North American Legacy Business, where he led initiatives to improve the profitability and risk profile of the inforce business. Naveed was also President & CEO of Manulife Singapore where he oversaw the overall development of Manulife's operations across all business segments and distribution platforms in Singapore. Prior to this role, he spent three years in a key leadership position at a major reinsurance company with a focus on global business and product development.

Naveed is an avid supporter of Manulife’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion efforts, and internal Employee Resource Groups. In 2022, Naveed was appointed to the Government of Canada’s Disability Inclusion Business Council – a select group of Canadian business leaders who provide the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion advice and recommendations on workplace inclusivity.

Naveed holds a B.Sc. in Actuarial Math from Concordia University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) and is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Active within his community and industry, Naveed serves on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Global Risk Institute, and Ascend Canada, promoting Pan-Asian leadership.

Rahul Joshi 

Chief Operations Officer

Rahul Joshi is Chief Operations Officer at Manulife.  In this role, Mr. Joshi oversees the Company’s global operations and global procurement organizations. He is a member of the Company’s Executive Leadership Team.

Prior to joining Manulife, Rahul was the Senior Vice President of Customer Care for Walmart’s US eCommerce organization, which included responsibility for contact centers, fraud operations and the customer returns experience. Under his leadership, the business significantly expanded customer contact channels through innovation, improved fraud loss performance, and enhanced the returns experience for online purchases, all during a period of high growth.

Previously, he held a range of large operating, customer experience and digital transformation roles with Citi across several geographies. Rahul served as Chief Operations Officer for the company’s Asia/EMEA Consumer bank located in Singapore, and prior to that was Chief Operations Officer for the US Consumer and Commercial bank.

Rahul holds a Master of Science in Management from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pune, India.

Pamela Kimmet

Chief Human Resources Officer

Pam Kimmet is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Manulife and is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. 

 

In her role as Chief Human Resources Officer, Pam is responsible for overseeing the Company’s Human Resources function and providing leadership to the people and culture elements of the Company’s transformation. Prior to joining Manulife as CHRO, Pam served as the Chief Human Resources Officer at Cardinal Health, Inc., a global health care services and products company.  Pam previously led the HR functions at Coca-Cola Enterprises, The Bear Stearns Companies, Inc. and Lucent Technologies. Pam also held a range of strategic HR roles at Citigroup and General Motors.  She served as a member of Manulife’s Board of Directors from March 2016 to September 4, 2018.

Pam serves as Chair of the HR Policy Association, and she was also the past Chair of the Association’s Center for Executive Compensation. Additionally, she serves on the boards for the Center for Advanced Human Resources Studies at Cornell University, and the Center for Executive Succession at the University of South Carolina. In 2009, Pam was named a Fellow in the National Academy of Human Resources.  Pam was also a member of the Board of Directors of Perspecta, Inc., a leading information systems and mission services provider to the U.S. Government prior to its sale to Veritas Capital in 2021..  She holds an MBA from Michigan State University and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.  

Karen Leggett

Chief Marketing Officer

Karen Leggett is Global Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Manulife and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team. In this role, Karen leads our Marketing, Innovation, Digital, and Analytics efforts globally. She oversees our customer experience transformation, partnering with Global Technology and Operations. 

 

Before joining Manulife, Karen most recently served as a Global Client Partner at Ernst & Young in the firm’s Financial Services Advisory practice. Prior to that, she was the Chief Marketing Officer at National Bank of Canada also leading Digital, Analytics, Innovation, and Corporate Development in emerging markets. She has held several senior positions at RBC, including leading two of its largest retail businesses; mortgages as well as payments and credit cards. Karen started her career at Great-West Life, working in a range of roles over a decade with the company.

Karen holds an Executive MBA from Richard Ivey School of Business and a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University.

Paul Lorentz

President & CEO, Global Wealth and Asset Management

Paul Lorentz is President & CEO of Global Wealth and Asset Management at Manulife. In this role, he has direct oversight over our wealth and asset management business, including our retirement, retail and asset management solutions offered worldwide. 

Paul is accountable for creating stronger global alignment by bringing these areas together into one single global organization and is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. Prior to this role, Paul served as General Manager of Individual Wealth Management and Insurance for the Canadian Division, overseeing Manulife Investments, Manulife Securities, Manulife Private Wealth, and Manulife Insurance. In this role, he was responsible for delivering industry leading advice, investment, and insurance solutions to Canadians. Paul joined Manulife in 1993 and has held a variety of roles of increasing responsibility throughout our Canadian operations.

Paul graduated from the University of Waterloo with a B. Mathematics, is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and is a graduate of the Queen’s Leadership Program.

Although his career has been fast moving, Paul is well known for the time he takes to devote to his family, coaching colleagues, and supporting community charities.

Colin Simpson

Chief Financial Officer

Colin Simpson is Chief Financial Officer of Manulife and a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. He is responsible for managing Manulife’s global financial affairs, including finance, accounting, capital, treasury, taxation, investor relations and financial regulation.

Prior to this appointment, Colin served as Chief Financial Officer for John Hancock, joining the company in 2022. He brings over 20 years of experience to his role, including at Aviva from 2013-2022, where he was most recently Interim Group CFO and prior served as CFO of Aviva’s Canadian division and Aviva’s Director of Investor Relations.

Previously, Colin held executive roles at Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns Investment Bank, where he was an equity analyst covering the European insurance sector. Earlier in his career, Colin held actuarial roles at the Reinsurance Group of America and Gen Re.

Colin holds a BSc in Statistics from the University of Cape Town and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA).

Brooks Tingle

President & CEO, John Hancock

Brooks Tingle is President and Chief Executive Officer of John Hancock, the U.S. segment of Toronto-based Manulife Financial Corporation. He also is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team.

Mr. Tingle, who is based in Boston, leads John Hancock — one of the largest life insurers in the United States, supporting more than ten million Americans with a broad range of financial products, including life insurance and annuities. John Hancock also supports US investors through a separate Global Wealth and Asset Management business, bringing leading investment capabilities and retirement planning and administration expertise to individuals and institutions.

Before taking on his current role in 2023, Mr. Tingle served as President and CEO of John Hancock Insurance. Notably, he led John Hancock to embrace and implement the company's now market-leading behavioral insurance solution — John Hancock Vitality — which offers life insurance customers significant savings and rewards for taking everyday steps towards a longer, healthier, better life. Previously, Mr. Tingle held various leadership roles across Marketing, Strategy, and Operations for John Hancock Insurance, building strong advanced analytics capabilities and overseeing new business, underwriting, claims, information technology, policy administration, customer service, and reinsurance administration.

Mr. Tingle serves as President and Chairman of the boards for John Hancock’s insurance companies, including John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.) and John Hancock Life Insurance Company of New York. Additionally, he is a member of the boards of the American Council of Life Insurers and LL Global, and serves on the Tufts Nutrition Council for the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

He received an MBA from Boston University and a B.A. in Economics from the University of New Hampshire.

Halina von dem Hagen

Chief Risk Officer

Halina von dem Hagen is Chief Risk Officer at Manulife. In this role, Ms. von dem Hagen is responsible for the Company’s Global Risk Management organization, including the oversight of risks across the enterprise. She is a member of the Company’s Executive Leadership Team.

In her previous role as Manulife’s Global Treasurer and Head of Capital Management, Ms. von dem Hagen oversaw the capital position of the company’s global operations, ensuring prudent capital management at a group level and each jurisdiction where Manulife operates.  She developed and executed global funding programs and managed relationships with rating agencies, banks, and fixed income investors.

Ms. von den Hagen joined Manulife in 2007 from Royal Bank of Canada where she spent 12 years in senior roles in the areas of treasury and risk management.

For her achievements, she received the WXN Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women award in 2017 in the Corporate Executives category. And her global expertise on capital matters was recognized through her selection in 2019 to the Insurance Policy Advisory Committee of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board.

Ms. von dem Hagen holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in international and monetary economics and is an alumna of Massey College.

Shamus Weiland

Chief Information Officer

Shamus Weiland is the Chief Information Officer for Manulife and is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. 

In his role, Shamus is responsible for overseeing the Company’s Technology function and aligning our Technology Strategy with our global businesses to maximize value delivery while optimizing the technology footprint and costs in order to achieve our goal to be a digital customer leader.  Prior to joining Manulife, Shamus was Managing Director, North America Consumer Technology Head at Citigroup in support of retail bank, mortgage, commercial bank and credit cards.  Additionally, Shamus served as CIO for Citi’s consumer bank in Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific spanning 17 countries and he also led the global product development function to deliver software and support services to all markets. 

Shamus was an Advisory Board Member at Singapore University of Technology and Design in 2016 and was named on a patent for Methods for Global Payments Processing. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame.   

Philip Witherington

President & CEO, Manulife Asia

Phil Witherington is President & Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Asia and has been a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team since 2018. He is responsible for Manulife’s fast-growing Asia franchise including businesses in Hong Kong and Macau, mainland China, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Prior to this appointment, Phil served five-years as Chief Financial Officer at Manulife beginning in 2018. He was responsible for managing Manulife’s global financial affairs, and successfully led the implementation of IFRS 17 and IFRS 9. Phil joined Manulife in 2014 as Chief Financial Officer of Manulife Asia, and served as its Interim President & Chief Executive Officer in 2017.

Phil has 25 years of experience in insurance and financial services, globally and in developed and emerging markets within Asia. Prior to joining Manulife, Phil led finance in Asia Pacific for the Retail Banking and Wealth Management business at HSBC and earlier served as the Deputy Regional Chief Financial Officer for its Asian insurance businesses. Previously, Phil was Vice President Finance at AIA, based in Hong Kong. He also spent a decade with KPMG in London and Hong Kong, specializing in financial services audit and advisory services, with a particular focus on life insurance clients.

Phil holds an Executive MBA jointly awarded by the University of Edinburgh Management School (United Kingdom) and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris, France). He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (FCA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FCPA).
