Compensation

Manulife’s base salary and incentive pay programs are designed to attract, motivate and retain capable and committed employees.

Every year we review salaries to make sure they’re aligned to be competitive in today’s market. We have a pay for performance philosophy which means our compensation is designed to reward employees whose performance contributes to the achievement of our business success.  Incentive awards are earned each year based on performance against objectives.

Benefits

Flexible Benefits Plan: A comprehensive benefits plan helps ensure you’re prepared for expected, and unexpected, benefit needs.

We offer a competitive benefits plan to all benefits-eligible employees in Canada. The flexibility of the plan recognizes the needs of our diverse workforce and gives employees the opportunity to select those benefits that work best for their families or lifestyles. Choices are based on different categories, including:
 

  • Extended health care (EHC): Coverage for prescription drugs, hospital care, professional services, vision care, medical supplies, etc. EHC is in addition to your provincial coverage. Various options are available, so you can choose the coverage that best suits your needs.
  • Dental: Covers services of a dentist or denturist. Various dental options are available, so you can choose the coverage that you require.
  • Long-term disability (LTD): This benefit provides a continued monthly income if you remain totally disabled from working after your Short-Term Disability has ended.
  • Life insurance: Basic life insurance of one times salary.
  • Optional benefits: Access to optional benefits for you and your dependents, including additional life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, a wellness day, and critical illness to supplement the above coverage.
  • Other benefits: The benefits plan provides the option for you to allocate employer-paid health dollars to a Health Care Spending Account, RRSP (employee and spousal) and/or Wellness Account.
  • Global share ownership program: Allows full-time and part-time employees to share in the success of our Company through Manulife stock ownership.
  • Group RRSP: The Group RRSP plan is available with more than 25 investment options to choose from. You can also benefit from lower investment management fees not typically available to individual investors.
  • Group TFSA: The Group TFSA provides another option to help you build savings for retirement and take advantage of tax-free growth.
  • Financial planning: Qualified advisors are available to help you with your planning needs through the Staff Financial Services program.
  • Educational assistance: Up to 100% up-front assistance on approved career-related courses.
Pensions

Canadian Pension Plan
Our pension plan lets you manage your own investments through a diverse range of investment funds. When you retire or leave Manulife, you can use the value of your account to purchase a pension or a retirement product with Manulife or another pension provider.

At Manulife, your pension amount is based on mandatory and optional contributions. Each pay period, employees are required to contribute 2% of pensionable earnings and Manulife is required to contribute 3%.

In addition to this required contribution, you can also contribute an optional amount of up to 5% of pensionable earnings. After one year of continuous service, Manulife will match the optional contribution at a rate of 50%, up to a maximum of 2.5% of your pensionable earnings.

Stars of Excellence
Each year, a select group of employees from around the world are nominated by their peers or management through the Stars of Excellence Program.

The program seeks to recognize employees for their significant professional achievements as well as an outstanding commitment to key behaviours that are aligned with our strategic focus and continued success.

The Stars of Excellence Program also includes the Community Award, which recognizes one employee’s outstanding contribution to the community and significant, sustained commitment to helping others, demonstrating a caring spirit and providing outstanding support through volunteer service.

In addition to the global Stars of Excellence program, divisions across the Company have their own programs to recognize and reward exceptional performance by employees at all levels.
