Child Life and Accident Insurance
If anything were to happen to your children, expenses would be the last thing on your mind. In this kind of crisis, Child Life and Accident Insurance can be there to help you make certain that cost considerations don't become an added burden to your family.
Choose the amount of coverage that meets your needs, from 1 to 5 units of coverage. Each unit provides $50,000 of Major Impairment benefit (for up to a total of $250,000) for each insured child. Each unit also provides $10,000 of Life Insurance benefit (for up to a total of $50,000) for each insured child over 14 days old. Each insured child under 15 days old is covered for a Life Insurance benefit of $5,000 (regardless of the number of units). The single monthly premium covers all your eligible dependent children, regardless of how many you have.
Eligibility
To apply for Child Life and Accident Insurance for your eligible child(ren), you must be covered by or applying for Member or Spouse Term Life Insurance. See the Child Life and Accident rates that apply to you, or let us calculate the cost for you.
- One monthly premium covers any number of children
A single monthly premium covers all your eligible children, regardless of how many, for the full coverage amount. Eligible children are unmarried, dependent on the Member for support, and under 21 years of age (or under 25 years of age if in full-time attendance at school or university.)
- Automatic coverage at birth
Once this coverage is in force, newborn children are automatically insured from birth, and no additional premium will be required.
- Coverage available with no medical questions to answer
Your acceptance is guaranteed for 1 unit of Child Life & Accident Insurance regardless of the health of any of your eligible children. No medical information is required to apply for a single unit of coverage, and no additional premium will be charged.
- All your premiums waived if you are disabled
If you become totally and permanently disabled before age 65, all premiums for Child Life and Accident Insurance will be waived beginning after three months of continuous disability, and for as long as your disability continues.
- Coverage that goes where you go
So long as you remain a member of a participating Institute and maintain your eligibility, you can take this coverage with you from one job to the next, anywhere in the world you may go.
- Receiving benefits
The Life Insurance benefit is payable in the event of death from any cause. The Major Impairment benefit is payable in the event of an accident resulting in severe brain damage, quadriplegia, hemiplegia, paraplegia or loss of use of the corresponding limbs. Benefits are payable to the insured Member or to the beneficiary appointed by the Member. The beneficiary may choose to receive the Major Impairment benefit either in a lump sum or according to any Manulife Financial settlement options available at that time.
- Limitations and exclusions
To be covered, a Major Impairment must occur within three months after the accident, and the child must survive the accident for at least 30 days. Any loss of use must be permanent, total and irreversible to be covered. Regardless of the number of units of coverage owned, the benefit payable under this Plan is limited to $5,000 of Life Insurance for the first 14 days of life.
