Manulife Financial gives $110,000 toward Hurricane Juan recovery
Funds donated to Canadian Red Cross, Halifax Public Gardens
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – Manulife Financial has committed $110,000 toward recovery efforts following Hurricane Juan, including a donation to the Canadian Red Cross and a large contribution to help rebuild the Halifax Public Gardens - a national historic site that suffered severe damage in the hurricane.
“Hurricane Juan devastated many residents of Halifax and people across the Maritimes, and the rest of Canada is focused on helping their recovery,” said Bruce Gordon, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Manulife Financial Canadian Operations. “Manulife has and wants a strong presence in Eastern Canada and is pleased to participate in rebuilding efforts.”
Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly said: “We are very pleased with Manulife’s generous donation to the restoration of the Public Gardens. This donation certainly demontrates Manulife’s ongoing commitment to this city.”
Earlier in October, Mr. Gordon told employees of Maritime Life, which is part of a proposed merger with Boston-based John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., that a Manulife donation would also be made to the Canadian Red Cross to help hurricane victims.
The donation is complemented by Manulife Financial’s more recent commitment of $100,000 during a Maritime Broadcasting System radiothon held on radio stations across the region in mid-October.
A total of $1,021,750 was raised through the first weekend of the event to support restoration of the Halifax Public Gardens.
Manulife Financial is committed to supporting communities in which we live and work, both in Canada and abroad, Mr. Gordon said. Recognized as a leader among Canadian corporations for its charitable donations and philanthropic activities, Manulife provided more than $6.2 million in sponsorships and donations in 2002 to more than 700 charitable organizations.
