ASIA
In Asia, Manulife contributes to a wide variety of projects in the countries and regions where it operates: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The Company and its employees and agents in these territories support underprivileged children and the elderly, as well as charitable organizations focused on health, wellness and education. Manulife also contributes to disaster relief when its territories are afflicted.
Some of the programs and activities undertaken by Asia division are listed below.
China
As one of Manulife-Sinochem’s long-running citizenship projects, the company sponsors the “MSL Dread Disease Charity Fund” under the Shanghai Charity Foundation, helping local university students suffering from dread diseases. MSL’s staff and agents also participate in local runs for charity, such as the Terry Fox run and the Welcome Spring Run in Ningbo.
Hong Kong
In Hong Kong, Manulife has been named a Caring Company by the Hong Kong Council of Social Services for five consecutive years in recognition of its ongoing commitment to sponsoring and taking part in charitable activities in the local community. The staff and agents of Manulife Hong Kong not only commit financial resources to various community programs, but also put their hearts into these initiatives for the needy.
In 2006, Manulife Hong Kong:
- funded the Manulife Centre for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
- renewed its sponsorship of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s cancer-patient counseling service at its Cancer Patient Resource Centre, set up at the Prince of Wales Hospital in 2003. The donation provides support to the Cancer Patient Counseling Service at the Cancer Patient Resource Centre under the Department of Clinical Oncology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
- organized a corporate blood drive to support Hong Kong Red Cross Transfusion Service’s call for blood donation
- sponsored and participated in the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s annual “Stride for a Cure” charity walk
- pledged a meaningful donation to charity drive ‘Operation Santa Claus’ and hosted a Christmas party for 120 elderly in Helping Hand’s Po Lam Housing for the Elderly
- continued to offer scholarships for children of staff, insurance/financial advisors and customers for the Canadian International School (CDNIS) for the upcoming 2007/2008 academic year.
Indonesia
Manulife Indonesia supports a number of schools across the country, providing funds for renovation or reconstruction, school necessities such as uniforms, books, writing instruments and food, as well as student scholarships.
Philippines
In the Philippines, a major community focus is helping children with disabilities through organizations that include, but are not limited to: Ephpheta Foundation that provides life skills training for blind people; the Pangarap Foundation that provides shelter and education to male street children; the Laura Vicuna Foundation that provides shelter and guidance for young girls who have been abused; and the Bahay Mapagmahal home where physically-challenged children from the underprivileged sector can find shelter, education and medical care.
Singapore
Manulife in Singapore is a strong supporter of the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund, which provides 10,000 children with snack money for school via a number of different fund raising activities such as: the sponsorship of the ChildAid Concert in 2006; the production of a ‘baby book’ for new families in cooperation with local hospitals; and various other grassroots community fundraisers.
Malaysia
Manulife Malaysia supports a number of organizations across the country via grassroots initiatives arranged by the numerous Branch offices of the company. Activities include, but are not limited to: disaster relief; providing educational tools for underprivileged, abused and mentally challenged children of lower income families; student scholarships; donations to the Kidney Foundation; and fundraising and participation in community Terry Fox Runs.
Thailand
In Thailand, Manulife has supported the building of a number of homes in Bangkok in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity. This partnership will continue this year with plans to assist with builds in Chiang Mai. In addition, Manulife Thailand provides funds to Foundations and Institutes for the health and well-being of disadvantaged or ill children. In 2006, Manulife was also a strong supporter and participant of the Terry Fox Run in Bangkok.
Vietnam
Manulife Vietnam is committed to supporting the communities in which it conducts business in both social and charitable activities. Some of the organizations Manulife has donated time and funds to include: the Vietnam Association for Promoting and Supporting Educational Development, the Terry Fox Foundation, Operation Smile missions across the country, Health Check and Care programs, the Saigon Children’s Charity, and the National Library for the Blind. Manulife Vietnam was recognized in 2006 by the Vietnam Association for Education Development and the Vietnam Association of Psychological - Educational Science for its significant contribution over the years to improving educational development for the younger generation in Vietnam.
