JAPAN

Manulife Japan is committed to building local communities through four key priorities:
  • Health
  • Education
  • Community Support
  • Volunteerism
Organizations Supported:
Japan Red Cross
Every year, in association with the Japan Red Cross, employees in Manulife Japan’s Head Office as well as its nationwide sales offices, participate in a blood donation campaign. These efforts give Manulife Japan employees a heightened sense of the importance of donating blood as well as an opportunity to contribute to their communities.

Terry Fox Run
Since 2003, Manulife Japan has supported the Terry Fox Run held annually in Tokyo with the goal of raising funds for the elimination of cancer. Manulife Japan employees support this goal through their monetary donations and their active participation as volunteers.

2005 World Expo
The Aichi World Expo was held in Japan from March-September 2005, and Manulife Japan took part as a sponsor of the Canada Pavilion. As a good corporate citizen, Manulife Japan contributed to Japanese society and promoted better relations between Japan, Canada, and the other countries of the world through support of activities related to the nurturing of today’s youth. Manulife Japan held four events at the Expo, including an event for seriously ill children, an event for physically challenged children who use wheelchairs, a workshop for senior high school students to provide them with strategies for achieving their life goals and aspirations, and a model UN conference run by university students.

Children's Hospitals
In connection with these Expo initiatives, Manulife Japan also held a “Manulife Paper Crane Fundraising Campaign” in 2005. Through this campaign, Manulife Plan Right Advisors throughout Japan called on their clients to make paper cranes. Manulife Japan made a donation based on the number of paper cranes made, and these funds, in addition to donations given by individual employees, were presented to the NPO Children's Health Forum to promote improvements in the hospital recuperation environments of children in Japan. Nearly 100,000 Manulife Japan clients nationwide participated in this paper crane campaign, with approximately 1.3 million yen raised for the NPO.

Since 2005, Manulife Japan has conducted an additional fundraising campaign each year to support initiatives to improve the recuperation environments of children at healthcare facilities across Japan. In 2007, the Company started the “Manulife WakuWaku Room” Project, an additional charity initiative in parternship with the NPO Children's Health Forum, to develop model playrooms in Japanese pediatric facilities and to raise awareness of the significance of the "playroom concept" of providing total care for children who are hospitalized or are undergoing outpatient treatment.

Junior Achievement Japan
In cooperation with Junior Achievement Japan, in 2006 Manulife Japan sponsored a nationwide Manulife CAPS Contest for Japanese elementary school children. More than 150 students in the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya regions competed in one-day business simulations creating and operating a virtual hat shop, with the top eight teams advancing to the national finals held at Manulife Japan’s Tokyo headquarters. Students gained hands-on experience in team-building, decision-making and the fundamentals of running a business. A second Manulife CAPS contest is scheduled for the fall of 2007.

In addition, through Manulife Japan’s sponsorship, in 2007 Junior Achievement Japan is offering the “CAPS” program to schools free of charge to make it part of their regular curriculum. Through the program awareness raised by the Manulife CAPS Contests, Junior Achievement Japan expects to increase the spread of the program to schools across Japan.

Support of Communities Affected by Natural Disasters
In order to support the area affected by the Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake in October 2004, Manulife Japan employees held a fundraising campaign following the disaster. The money raised was donated to Central Community Chest of Japan and was put to practical use by disaster victims as well as volunteer aid workers. Manulife Japan also donated 700 specially-made Manulife T-shirts to the volunteers engaged in the recovery efforts.

In 2006, Manulife Japan worked together with Central Community Chest of Japan to create a fund supporting recovery programs for victims of natural disasters in Japan. More than 3,000 employees participated in spring and autumn fundraising drives to establish the fund. Once donations had been collected, Central Community Chest of Japan solicited proposals from community organizations and funded initiatives in four disaster-affected areas to help residents achieve economic self-sufficiency. Manulife Japan will continue to promote and sustain the fund through additional fundraising in 2007.
