Manulife Centre Holds Free Seminar
Helping Chinese Dyslexic and Learning-disabled Students Learn English as a Second Language

Hong Kong
— The Manulife Centre for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities (MCCSLD) is holding a free seminar on Saturday, July 5, 2008, to introduce effective ways of learning English as a second language for dyslexic students.

In the seminar, Dr. Alice Cheng-Lai of the MCCSLD will discuss the issues relating to learning English as a second language, and to unveil effective methods that facilitate dyslexic students in their acquisition of the English language. Dr. Lai will also introduce resources and programs that match the students’ developmental and educational needs.

English is a common medium of study in Hong Kong. While many students are facing multitude of challenges in coming to terms with the academic and linguistic demands of the curriculum through a language that is not their mother tongue; students who are dyslexic are even doubly challenged because of their cognitive weaknesses.

Conducted in Cantonese, the seminar is open to all members of public, especially for parents and teachers of children with dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties. Details of the seminar are as follows:

  • Date: July 5, 2008 (Saturday)
  • Time: 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Venue:Lecture Room N002, Main Campus of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University

  • Admission: No admission fee. All seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis
