Manulife Volunteer Force Helps “Qile” Charity Cake Drive to Achieve
Good Fund-Raising Results

Hong Kong – The volunteer force from Manulife (International) Limited (MIL) has helped the Haven of Hope Christian Service’s “Qile” Charity Cake Drive to raise more funds than last year, despite the gloomy economy in Hong Kong. Manulife was the major sponsor of the event, which raised more than HK$1.9 million this year - 12 per cent more than in 2001. The funds raised will support Haven of Hope’s elderly-care services.

Nearly 1,000 Manulife staff and insurance advisors participated as volunteers in the public sale drive on August 3 and 4, with Manulife booths set up at more than 50 Mass Transit Railway stations and shopping malls in Hong Kong. Manulife volunteers also drove selling of “Qile” cakes within the Company in July. Almost HK$800,000 was raised from these initiatives as well as other cash donations in support of the good cause.

“We are pleased with the fund-raising results which were achieved by the collective efforts of Manulifers as well as our customers. Manulife’s support for this charity event demonstrates our commitment to being an active and caring corporate citizen in Hong Kong,” said Edward Lau, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong, MIL.

“Even though there was a typhoon during the public sale and many outdoor booths were closed, our volunteers showed their enthusiasm and dedication by selling as many cakes as possible to help the needy. This has been a valuable and memorable experience for our volunteers,” added Mr. Lau.

“We are very pleased with the wholehearted support from Manulife. This kind of selfless contribution and volunteer participation from a big corporation is particularly precious to us in this current economic climate,” said Dr. Lam Ching-choi, Medical Director of the Haven of Hope Christian Service.

Manulife’s involvement in the “Qile” Charity Cake Drive goes beyond traditional corporate sponsorship. The “Qile” Charity Cake Drive in Hong Kong is part of Manulife’s 2002 Global Volunteer project, which encourages staff and insurance advisors to “Connect to What Matters” in their communities. It provides a practical and meaningful way for Manulife’s staff and insurance advisors to make a difference in Hong Kong through volunteering and getting involved directly.
