Manulife Taiwan to provide additional coverage and services in light of SARS outbreak

Taipei – Manulife Taiwan today announced a series of new initiatives to ensure that its customers are adequately covered against any financial costs that result from the treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Following an increase in public concern after the government this week took preventive measures to control the spread of the disease, Manulife is offering SARS-related insurance coverage to meet the growing needs of customers and the broader community.

The additional services offered are:
1. The daily hospital income benefit from Manulife medical riders will be doubled for hospital confinement as a result of a confirmed SARS case.
2. When a policyholder recovers from SARS and is quarantined at home, 50 per cent of the daily hospital income will continue to be payable during the 10-day quarantine period.
3. For death within 30 days after the confirmation of SARS, an extra death benefit of 100 per cent of the sum assured under the life policies, subject to a maximum additional benefit of $100,000, will become payable.

Manulife Taiwan also confirmed that all health insurance policies include statutory infectious diseases. If a policyholder has the misfortune of contracting SARS, they will be eligible to claim for medical expenses as per the standard provisions.

“While the Taiwan Government has been aggressively taking action to reduce the risk of getting SARS, it has been reported that the risk has risen in the last few days,” stated Michael Huddart, General Manager of Manulife. “For our customers’ peace of mind in these uncertain times, we have decided to add the additional benefits, effective immediately.”

“As well as implementing changes for existing customers, we are also making it easier for new customers to get medical coverage as quickly as possible, by reducing restrictions as well as the waiting period, from 30 days to 10 days,” added Mr. Huddart.

The above services will be provided from May 1st to the end of July. Manulife Taiwan will be notifying all their policyholders by mail about the changes. Policyholders are invited to contact their agent or call Head Office using the toll-free number 0800-008838 for more details.
