Manulife USA donates $100,000 to Edward Everett Elementary School Schoolyard Initiative

Boston– Manulife USA proudly presented $100,000 to the Edward Everett Elementary School in Dorchester today as part of its schoolyard renovation project.

The project began as part of The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, a public/private partnership sponsored by Mayor Menino to transform urban schoolyards into dynamic centers for learning and community life. The City of Boston has dedicated significant funding to the Everett’s project, and Manulife USA’s grant will serve as seed money for additional grants and fundraising. The Everett’s playground will serve an educational role, as a place to plant flowers, read outdoors and offer formal physical education classes.

“Our partnership with the Edward Everett Elementary School reflects Manulife USA’s corporate giving mission to enhance the lives of children and strengthen the neighborhoods in which they live and learn,” said Alison Alden, Executive Vice President, U.S. Human Resources and Communications at Manulife USA. “We are committed to increasing the opportunities for children and are proud to be working with one of Boston’s most respected schools.”

This grant is part of Manulife USA’s ongoing commitment as the Everett’s business partner since 1996. Manulife USA currently sponsors the Before School Enrichment Program providing targeted learning before school. In 2001, the Everett was selected by the Superintendent of Boston Public Schools as one of the City’s 26 “Effective Practice Schools.” Having an extra-curricular educational program, like the one made possible by Manulife USA, was part of this important distinction.

“With Manulife USA’s help, the new schoolyard will provide a place for play and education which is so important for an urban school,” said Kathleen Flannery, Principal of the Edward Everett Elementary School. “We are fortunate to have the support of Manulife USA, which realizes the value of investing in our children’s futures.”
