Paul L. Rooney, FSA, FCIA

Paul RooneyPaul Rooney is President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Financial’s Canadian Division. He is also President and CEO of Manulife Canada Ltd. and a member of Manulife Financial’s Executive Committee.

A 24-year Manulife veteran, Mr. Rooney has extensive experience in leadership roles within the company. Prior to his current role, he was Chief Financial Officer for Manulife’s Canadian Division, a position he assumed in March 2006. 

In 1998, Mr. Rooney took over as Vice President and General Manager of Affinity Markets. The significant growth and success that the business unit experienced under his leadership resulted in the expanded role he assumed in 2001 as Executive Vice President of Individual Insurance. In addition to continued responsibility for Affinity Markets, this position encompassed leadership for all Individual Insurance activities and joint responsibility for Distribution.

Mr. Rooney’s versatility and strategic marketing and financial expertise have been critical factors throughout his Manulife career. In 1996, he served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, U.S. Savings and Retirement Services and North American Group Pensions.  Prior to that, he had been promoted to Assistant Vice President and Product Manager of U.S. Individual Marketing, after serving as Actuary of the U.S. Corporate Financial area since 1991.

Mr. Rooney began his career with Manulife in 1986 in Toronto’s Corporate Division as an actuarial student. He was quickly promoted to Senior Actuarial Associate for the Company’s U.S. Individual Marketing area. He added more depth to this experience in 1989 when he transferred to a similar role within the Corporate Actuarial Department.

In addition to heading Manulife Financial’s Canadian Division and Manulife Canada, Ltd., Mr. Rooney is on the Board of Directors for Manulife Bank of Canada, Manulife Trust Company and Manulife Asset Management Limited. He is a Member of the Dean's Advisory Council for Wilfrid Laurier's School of Business and Economics and hosts the Manulife Bike and Hike for Heart, a highly-successful annual fund-raiser for St. Mary’s Cardiac Care Centre in Kitchener, Ontario that supports heart health.

Mr. Rooney holds an Honours Bachelor of Science from The University of Western Ontario and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
