Asia Division: Bringing Dreams to Life
Manulife contributes to a wide variety of projects in the Asian countries and regions where we operate: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The Company and its employees and agents in these territories support underprivileged children and the elderly, as well as charitable organizations focused on health, wellness and education. Manulife also contributes to disaster relief when its territories are afflicted.
Helping Communities Rebuild
On May 12, 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit the Chinese Province of Sichuan. Manulife-Sinochem donated RMB 4.5 million to reconstruct 5 special schools for nearly 400 children with a range of mental and physical disabilities in the cities of Deyang, Nanchong, Luzhou, Yibin and Suining.
The schools were severely damaged and could not be used without repairs. The donation came from funds raised by Manulife employees and agents throughout Asia and from Manulife-Sinochem staff, agents and customers in China. The new schools, renamed Manulife-Sinochem schools, opened for the new school year in September 2009. In addition to the reconstruction of the school buildings, the donation also was used to purchase new equipment and facilities such as desks and chairs as well as sporting equipment, musical instruments and books for the students.
Bringing the Olympic spirit to our communities
Supporting Manulife’s Olympic theme of bringing dreams to life, we organized a wide range of initiatives to help staff, agents and local communities share in the Olympic spirit and to encourage friendship and fair play for all through a series of Olympic activities. Below are some examples from the region:
Manulife-Sinochem’s Olympic Smiles
In China, Manulife-Sinochem’s Olympic Smiles program established 100 libraries around China designed specifically to encourage disadvantaged children to develop a love of reading.
In preparation for the establishment of the libraries, Manulife-Sinochem ran a book donation project with agents and customers throughout the country. The initiative saw more than 46,000 books donated.
Manulife Hong Kong Olympic Smiles
In Hong Kong, employees delivered Olympic Games mascot toys to the kids of Heep Hong Society’s Cheung Ching Early Education and Training Centre at a special ceremony marking our donation to set up a musical movement and play therapy room.
Through Olympic Smiles, we also supported the Hong Chi Association by making a donation to its Meal Subsidy Program and distributing Olympic Fuwa mascot toys to the children. The Association is the largest non-profit organization in Hong Kong serving mentally-challenged individuals.
Manulife Malaysia’s Kids’ Olympics
Manulife Malaysia organized Kids’ Olympics - a special sports carnival for children from underprivileged homes in the Klang Valley to give them their own taste of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Manulife employees and agents served as volunteers to cheer these special Olympians, while “Huanhuan”, the Olympic mascot, made an appearance during the opening and the prize-giving ceremonies.
Manulife Philippines’ Olympic Smiles at the Special Education Alliance Games
Olympic mascot, Jingjing made a special appearance for over 550 students, their teachers and guests at the Special Education Alliance Games. Students with special needs took part in a daylong, interschool competition featuring different sports and educational games. Manulife employees and agents served as marshals and judges during this fun filled yet educational event.
Manulife Taiwan “Olympic Walk”
Manulife Taiwan organized a special “Walk for the Olympics, Go Taiwan” program, held simultaneously in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung to raise money for needy causes. All guests held a special Olympic torch and lit the flame to start the Olympic Walk in Taiwan, together with Olympic mascot, Huanhuan.
