1969, John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston acquires The Maritime Life Assurance Company. The company continues as The Maritime Life Assurance Company.

2000, The Maritime Life Assurance Company amalgamates with Aetna Life Insurance Company of Canada. The company continues as The Maritime Life Assurance Company.

2001, The Maritime Life Assurance Company acquires Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada and amalgamates the following year.

2004, Manulife Financial Corporation acquires John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., including its Canadian subsidiary The Maritime Life Assurance Company. The Maritime Life Assurance Company transfers its business to MFC Insurance Company Limited, which amalgamates with The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company.
