1884, The Temperance and General Life Assurance Company of North America is incorporated by an Act of Parliament.

1901, The Temperance and General Life Assurance Company of North America amalgamates with The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. The new entity temporarily continues as The Manufacturers and Temperance and General Life Assurance Company. By an Order of Council, the company changes its name back to The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company later in the year.
