Kuala Lumpur– Worldwide Olympic Partner Manulife Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad (Manulife Malaysia) today presented cash prizes worth RM39,500 to 15 athletes for their outstanding performance at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing. The presentation took place at a special awards ceremony at Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur.
The cash prizes are awarded under the Manulife/Olympic Council of Malaysia Athletes of the Games programme, which began in 1995.
“Today, we would like to specially recognise the Manulife/Olympic Council of Malaysia ‘Athlete of the Games’ award recipients,” said Mr. Peter Robertson, President and CEO of Manulife Malaysia, in paying tribute to the Olympians.
“Competing at an Olympics pits our Malaysians athletes against the best in the world. These Athlete of the Games award recipients have demonstrated their ability to perform at the highest level and can be proud of their achievements,” added Mr. Robertson.
“Every athlete dreams of competing at the Olympic Games. It takes years of hard work, commitment and a passion to succeed to get there. The Manulife/OCM ‘Athlete of the Games’ Award, aims to help to motivate athletes towards achieving this goal by recognizing those that have excelled at international sporting events and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps,” said YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, President, Olympic Council of Malaysia.
The award recipients received their cash prizes from YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Tuanku Ja’afar and Mr. Peter Robertson.
In this edition of the Manulife/Olympic Council of Malaysia Athlete of the Games Award programme, RM8,000 was awarded to Y.Bhg Dato’ Lee Chong Wei who won a silver medal in the Men’s Singles badminton category. Athletes who finished in 8th placing or entered the quarter-final or broke national records are presented RM2,250 each. The criteria for distribution of the cash award was jointly decided OCM and Manulife Malaysia.
“We want to thank Manulife Malaysia for the commitment towards sports development in this country. They have continuously come forward to reward outstanding athletes since this programme was first introduced in 1995 and their contribution is much appreciated by both our Malaysian athletes and the Olympic Council of Malaysia,” said YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Tuanku Ja’afar.
Since 1995, Manulife Malaysia, as one of the official sponsors of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, has contributed more than RM489,500 to the development of sports in this country through the Manulife/Olympic Council of Malaysia Athletes of the Games programme. The programme has rewarded over 265 athletes for their performances at the SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.
