Manulife Senior Appointment

– new Employee Benefits business head

Hong Kong— Manulife (International) Limited (MIL) announced the appointment of Alan Merten as Vice President, Employee Benefits. Mr. Merten will succeed Nick Crouch, who is retiring in November 2007.

Mr. Merten will lead MIL’s Employee Benefits business and be responsible for services and products, including Pension Fund, Group Life and Group Medical products, that Manulife provides to employers in Hong Kong. He will oversee the overall marketing, channel relationships, product development and administration management of the Employee Benefits services.

An industry veteran who brings more than two decades of experience in pensions, wealth management, life insurance, health insurance and general insurance from Australia, European and Asian markets, Mr. Merten will be responsible for further strengthening Manulife’s leading edge in Employee Benefits services in Hong Kong.

As a member of the top management team, he will also play an active part in the overall strategy and direction of the Hong Kong operation.

Michael Huddart, Manulife’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong, is pleased to have an experienced practitioner as Mr. Merten joining Manulife: “Employee Benefits, especially MPF, has been an essential and successful business for Manulife. Coming from Australia where the pensions system is similar to Hong Kong, but larger and more mature, Alan will be a valuable expert for our Employee Benefits business as the Hong Kong market continues to grow and mature.”

Prior to joining Manulife, Mr. Merten was the General Manager of a specialist financial-planning and retail pensions fund business in Australia — responsible for the creation, launch and development of this business, which quickly became a leader in its target market, helping those planning for and managing their retirement assets.

Mr. Merten holds an MBA from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
