Hong Kong— Manulife (International) Limited (MIL) has been rated one of the best companies in the Greater China region in terms of the quality of its corporate leadership and leadership development culture in a prestigious study conducted by the internationally circulatedFORTUNEmagazine, global human-resources firm Hewitt Associates and specialist leadership consultants The RBL Group.
Some 564 entities from 41 countries took part in the “Top Companies for Leaders” study, which ranked these companies’ leadership performance both regionally and globally. Manulife came fourth in the Greater China region and was the only insurance firm and the only company from Hong Kong to be recognised in this category, following an exhaustive screening that included many variables, such as the survey and interview data, company reputation, leadership culture and values, and a proven track record.
Robert Cook, Manulife’s Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia, commented: “We are very pleased with this recognition, especially since the rankings were made both regionally and globally, and against a very large field of world-class companies. We believe our company’s success lies in the demonstrated commitment by senior management to ingrain relevant leadership principles at all levels of the company, sustaining that philosophy over time, and concurrently facilitating professional growth in the process.
“Global consistency is another important factor: MIL’s local practices in Greater China are similar to those used by the firm on a worldwide basis. The same Manulife values are applied globally, whether the operations are in Canada, China or Japan, and that helps to nurture consistent leadership qualities among staff.”
MIL adheres firmly to corporate values such as quality leadership, constructive culture, and high engagement levels of its staff. “I believe such values differentiate us in Hong Kong, and that they ultimately ensure improved and sustainable results. This award is truly a recognition of Manulife’s deep corporate culture and industry-defining policies and practices,” said Michael Huddart, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong, MIL.
May Wong, Manulife’s Assistant Vice President, Human Resources, further explained that the company is committed to developing leadership through a variety of measures, such as grooming would-be leaders at every level through a series of in-house leadership programs and ongoing training sessions, identifying leadership potential at an early stage and encouraging people to nurture their own leadership style.
To find the “Top Companies for Leaders”, some 10,000 firms from around the world were sent survey questionnaires and out of those that answered them, a short list of finalists was arrived at. These were then screened and graded by a distinguished panel of judges consisting of leading authors, academics and journalists.
Full results of the survey can be found on Fortune’s web site.
