Manulife Japan and Central Community Chest Japan Contribution Fund to Aid Disaster–Affected Areas

Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake Emergency Assistance Donation of JPY 1.4 M Made to Central Community Chest Japan

Tokyo - Manulife Life Insurance Company (Head Office: Chofu City, Tokyo; President and CEO: Geoff Crickmay), in response to the devastation caused by the Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake, has made a donation of 1,461,005 yen for emergency assistance. The donation is made up of contributions by both Manulife Japan employees and the Company to Central Community Chest Japan. Central Community Chest Japan will distribute the funds to aid the areas affected by the disaster.

In addition to this emergency assistance, Manulife Japan is actively contributing to the revival of areas affected by earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. Last year the Company, together with Central Community Chest Japan, established the “Manulife Japan and Central Community Chest Japan Contribution Fund to Aid Disaster-Affected Areas” through which the Company is continuing to support self-recovery efforts of residents in disaster-affected areas. The “Manulife Japan and Central Community Chest Japan Contribution Fund to Aid Disaster-Affected Areas” is a new and unique type of donation project that combines both contributions from individual employees as well as the company itself to support self-recovery efforts by residents not only immediately after a disaster but long-term as well. To date, donations have been given in support of recovery from torrential rains and flooding in Nagano Prefecture in July 2006, the Kagoshima Prefecture Flood, and also in support of recovery efforts continuing from the 2004 Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Earthquake and the 2000 volcano eruption on Miyake Island.

Recently, natural disasters have been occurring in quick succession. In recognition that a system which supports the recovery efforts of disaster-affected areas is required to an even greater degree, Manulife Japan will conduct another fundraising campaign this fall to continue its support of self-recovery efforts for disaster-affected areas.
