Johor - Residents of Sherun Old Folks Home in Johor Baru had a pleasant surprise when 22 Manulife agency members and staff paid a visit to their home recently. The visit coincided with celebrations to mark World Senior Citizen Day on 1 October 2009.
Sherun Old Folks Home houses 58 senior citizens and the Manulife contingent chatted to the residents in an engaging and fun “getting-to-know-you” session during which the residents readily shared some of their life experiences.
“As a Manulife agency member, we want to play our part in keeping with Manulife’s commitment to giving back to communities where we conduct our business. We often forget that people interaction is crucial in making the elderly feel important and cared for, so we decided to spend some time at the home,” said Mr. Ho Chin Hwa, a Manulife Agency Manager.
As part of the visit, Sherun Old Folks Home received RM5,000 worth of essential items comprising two washing machines and some food supplies.
The items were presented by Manulife Agency Director, Mr Kam Sing Ming to the Home’s Assistant to the Founder, Mr Veliatham.
During the cheer visit, the home residents were also treated to a sumptuous meal specially prepared for them.
“Senior citizens are an asset to any family and like any other family members, they deserve our care and attention. It is important that we remember and appreciate their past contributions to society. For the elderly, it can be very lonely if they do not have friends visiting them. We hope our visit today has made a difference to their life.” said Mr Kam.
“On behalf of the Home, I would like to thank Manulife for this kind gesture as the Home depends mainly on the contribution of generous individuals and organisations to operate. It is also very thoughtful of Manulife to check with us on what items are needed. These items will definitely help to alleviate the home’s expenses besides creating a better living environment for the residents.” said Mr Veliatham.
