Hong Kong — Some 730 Manulifers rolled up their sleeves to give blood at the company-wide blood drive organized for the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service in early July.

As has now become an annual tradition, staff and agents mingled as they lined up in droves to make their life-giving contributions — at three of Manulife office premises in Kwun Tong, Causeway Bay and Jordon.

Michael Huddart, Manulife’s Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Hong Kong, said: “Manulife has been supporting the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service for more than three decades, so I’m delighted but not surprised to see such a positive response from our staff and agents. It demonstrates once again the altruistic spirit of giving back to the community that runs so deep in this company.”

The annual blood-drive is organized by Manulife Recreation Club (MRC), which was set up in 1975 to coordinate recreational and welfare activities as well as community services for the company’s staff and agents. Ricky Lam, Chairman, 2012 MRC Blood Donation Project said it is encouraging to see such a high turnout: “Blood donors help save lives every day through their blood donations, I’m so proud of Manulifers who come forward to support this good cause.”

The first such Manulife blood drive was organized in 1979. Since 2010, the company has also signed up with the Hong Kong Bone Marrow Donor Registry — with more than 100 Manulifers pledging to help patients who are suffering from leukemia.
