Claudio Macchi joined Manulife in 1998 as Vice President & Chief Underwriting Officer of Manufacturers P&C Ltd. (Manulife Re), the third party P&C reinsurance company of Manulife.

In 2008, Mr. Macchi was appointed President & Chief Executive Officer of Manufacturers P&C Ltd. In this role, Mr. Macchi is responsible for the global third party P&C reinsurance operation of Manulife Financial Corporation. Mr. Macchi also serves as President & CEO of Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Ltd., the affiliated life reinsurance operation for Manulife’s Asian business.

 

Mr. Macchi is a Senior Vice President of Manulife Financial Corporation and member of the Global Leadership Team. In addition, he serves as a Chairman/Director on various Manulife subsidiary boards.

 

Before joining Manulife Re, Mr. Macchi was an Account Underwriter for Swiss Re and from 1988 to 1994 was an Underwriter for Zurich Insurance Company, where he started his re/insurance career in Zurich, Switzerland.

 

Mr. Macchi has a diploma in Commercial Business from the Commercial Business School at KV Zurich and a diploma of Business Administration from Swiss Institute of Business Administration, Zurich.

 

Mr. Macchi is a Swiss citizen and since 2014 the Honorary Consul-General of the Swiss Confederation to Barbados.

Mark Ferguson

Vice President, Underwriting

Mark Ferguson joined the Manulife in 2006 as an Underwriter and Business Analyst of Manufacturers P&C Limited (Manulife Re). In this role he was responsible for providing underwriting support to the Chief Underwriting Officer.

As the role expanded, Mr. Ferguson was promoted to the role of Underwriting Director in 2009. Additional management responsibilities were added with the creation of the Shared Services team, which Mr. Ferguson leads and as of March 1, 2014, Mr. Ferguson was promoted to the position of Vice President Underwriting within Manulife Re.

 

Prior to joining Manulife Re, Mr. Ferguson worked for Aon Limited in London, a broking company placing insurance and reinsurance business worldwide. Mr. Ferguson was employed as a broker and business analyst in the Specialty department focusing on Property Retrocession business.

 

Mr. Ferguson is a graduate of the University of Wales (UK) with a joint honours degree in French and German and is a British citizen.

Renee Springer-Haynes

Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

Renee Springer-Haynes joined Manufacturers P & C Limited in 2001 as a Senior Accountant. In 2016 she was appointed Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. In her current role, Mrs. Springer-Haynes is responsible for the financial reporting, cash management, regulatory and compliance reporting of the Company. She also holds the position of Corporate Secretary of Manufacturers P & C Limited.

Mrs. Springer-Haynes is the Financial Controller of two of Manulife’s affiliate life reinsurance subsidiaries; Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Limited and The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (Barbados Branch).

 

Prior to joining Manufacturers P&C Limited, Mrs.Springer-Haynes worked as an auditor providing audit and advisory services to various banking and retail clients and was the Financial Controller of a retail business in the private sector.

 

Mrs. Springer-Haynes has a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus Barbados and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in England (FCCA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados. She is an Associate in Reinsurance (ARe).

Candace Cooper

Vice President & Actuary

Candace Cooper joined Manulife in Toronto in 1999 as an Actuarial Associate and has since progressed through roles of increasing responsibility within the company. In 2016 Ms. Cooper was appointed Vice President & Actuary of Manufacturers P & C Limited. Ms. Cooper also currently serves as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Limited, the affiliated life reinsurance operation for Manulife’s Asian business.

In her current role Ms. Cooper is responsible for the actuarial functions of the Barbados-based companies.  She is accountable for the design, pricing and negotiation of all new affiliate reinsurance transactions for the Manulife’s life operations in Barbados, amending existing treaties, and monitoring the performance of the affiliate reinsurance treaties.  Her duties also include the risk management and investment management of the life business.

 

Ms. Cooper has held actuarial roles in a variety of Manulife’s businesses, including life insurance, retirement plan services and sponsored marketing, in both Canadian and U.S. markets.  She also spent many years in Manulife’s capital management function where she was responsible for local capital oversight, regulatory capital filings and company-wide stress tests and quantitative studies.

 

Ms. Cooper holds a Double Honours Bachelor of Mathematics degree in Actuarial Science and Statistics from the University of Waterloo, Canada.  She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Philip J. Witherington

Director, Chief Financial Officer, Manulife, Canada

Phil Witherington is Chief Financial Officer at Manulife. Prior to this appointment, he was the Interim President & Chief Executive Officer Manulife Asia, where he was responsible for Manulife Asia operations in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Phil is a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team.

Previously, Phil was Chief Financial Officer, Manulife Asia, leading transformational change within the finance function in Asia and providing strong financial leadership to business decisions by influencing divisional strategy and business unit profitability, as well as leading financial due diligence of all merger and acquisition opportunities.

 

Phil joined Manulife in 2014 and has 20 years of experience in insurance and financial services, in both developed and emerging markets within Asia. Prior to joining Manulife, Phil led finance in Asia Pacific for the Retail Banking and Wealth Management business at HSBC and earlier served as the Deputy Regional Chief Financial Officer for its Asian insurance businesses. Previously, Phil was Vice President Finance at AIA, based in Hong Kong. He also spent a decade with KPMG, based in London and Hong Kong, specializing in financial services audit and advisory services, with a particular focus on life insurance clients.

 

Phil holds an Executive MBA jointly awarded by the University of Edinburgh Management School (United Kingdom) and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris, France). He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (FCA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FCPA). Outside of work, his contributions to the community include being a member of the Board and Treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society in Hong Kong, a position he has held since 2008.

Dr. Erwin Zimmerman

After a management career in primary insurance (Allianz) and reinsurance (Executive Board Member at Swiss Re), Dr. Zimmermann started his own financial services advisory and investment business (ziAd). Dr. Zimmermann holds a PhD in social science from the University of Constance.

Andrew Thornhill

Director & Independent Board Member, Q.C. Attorney-At-Law, George Walton Payne & Co., Barbados

Andrew graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1987 with an LLB (Hons) degree and went to work with Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouse Coopers) in their Tax Department.  He then worked with Concorde Bank Limited, an international merchant and trustee bank as its Legal Officer. Thereafter, he attended the Hugh Wooding Law School, and graduated there from in 1995 and was called to the Barbados Bar in the same year.

Andrew is currently the Managing Partner of the law firm George Walton Payne & Co. He is a Charter Member of the Congress of Fellows of the Center for International Legal Studies. He is the author of, and regularly updates, the Barbados Chapter for the volume entitled “International Taxation of Low-Tax Transactions”, published by the Center for International Legal Studies. He is also the author of, and regularly updates, the Barbados Chapter for the Sweet & Maxwell publications “Aircraft Finance: Registration, Security and Enforcement” and “Aircraft Liens & Detention Rights”.

 

Andrew has made presentations in the United States of America, Germany, United Kingdom and Hong Kong on the use of Barbados as an International Business and Financial Services Jurisdiction. He has also made presentations locally on matters of corporate and commercial law.

 

He is a member of the Board of Directors of several multi -international company’s subsidiaries in Barbados.

 

Andrew works closely with major United States, Canadian, and European Law firms in cross-border mergers and acquisitions; the structuring of international corporate financial transactions, including the preparation of legal documentation, the review of legal documentation, perfecting security given in respect of the financing, and the provision of legal advice and legal opinions.

 

On 6 April 2018 he was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel for Barbados.
