Manulife Re is the global reinsurance operation of Manulife Financial Corporation. We serve all our property and casualty clients through Manufacturers P&C Limited*, located in Barbados. Established in 1986, we are a long-term and well-established player in the highly specialized market of property and aviation retrocession. Manulife Re offers superior financial security and provides customer-focused solutions that help our clients manage the earnings volatility that results from large catastrophic property and aviation events.

Claudio Macchi

President & Chief Executive Officer

Claudio Macchi joined Manulife Financial Corporation in 1998 as Vice President & Chief Underwriting Officer of Manufacturers P&C Limited (Manulife Re), the third-party P&C reinsurance company of Manulife.

In 2008, he was appointed President & Chief Executive Officer of Manufacturers P&C Ltd., and in this role, he is responsible for the global third-party P&C reinsurance operation of Manulife Financial Corporation. Claudio also serves as President & CEO of Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Ltd., the affiliated life reinsurance operation for Manulife’s Asian business.

Claudio is a Senior Executive of Manulife Financial Corporation and a member of the Global Leadership Team (GLT). In addition, he serves as a Chairman/Director on various Manulife subsidiary boards.

Before joining Manulife Re, he was an Account Underwriter for Swiss Re and from 1988 to 1994 was an Underwriter for Zurich Insurance Company, where he started his re/insurance career in Zurich, Switzerland.

Claudio has a diploma in Commercial Business from the Commercial Business School at KV Zurich and a diploma of Business Administration from Swiss Institute of Business Administration, Zurich.

He is a Swiss citizen and since 2014 the Honorary Consul-General of the Swiss Confederation to Barbados.

Mark Ferguson

Vice President, Underwriting

Mark Ferguson joined Manulife in 2006 as an Underwriter and Business Analyst of Manufacturers P&C Limited (Manulife Re). In this role he was responsible for providing underwriting support to the Chief Underwriting Officer.

As the role expanded, Mark was promoted to the role of Underwriting Director in 2009. Additional management responsibilities were added with the creation of the Shared Services team, which he leads and as of March 1, 2014, Mark was promoted to the position of Vice President, Underwriting within Manulife Re.

Prior to joining Manulife Re, Mark worked for Aon Limited in London, a broking company placing insurance and reinsurance business worldwide. He was employed as a broker and business analyst in the Specialty department focusing on Property Retrocession business.

Mark is a graduate of the University of Wales (UK) with a joint honours degree in French and German and is a British citizen.

Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

Renee Springer-Haynes joined Manufacturers P&C Limited in 2001 as a Senior Accountant. In 2016 she was appointed Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. In her current role, Renee is responsible for the financial reporting, cash management, regulatory and compliance reporting of the Company. 

Renee is the Financial Controller of two of Manulife’s affiliate life reinsurance subsidiaries; Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Limited and The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (Barbados Branch).

Prior to joining Manufacturers P&C Limited, she worked as an auditor providing audit and advisory services to various banking and retail clients and was the Financial Controller of a retail business in the private sector.

Renee has a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus Barbados and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in England (FCCA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados. She is an Associate in Reinsurance (ARe).

Craig McNiven

Vice President & Actuary

Craig McNiven joined Manulife in 2007 as an Actuarial Associate and has since progressed through roles of increasing responsibility within the company. In 2024, he was appointed as Vice President & Actuary of Manufacturers P&C Limited and serves as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Manufacturers Life Reinsurance Limited, the affiliated life reinsurance operation for Manulife’s Asian business.

In his current role, Craig is responsible for the actuarial functions of the Barbados-based companies, including the design, pricing, and negotiation of all new affiliate reinsurance transactions for Manulife’s life operations in Barbados, amending existing treaties, and monitoring the performance of the affiliate reinsurance treaties. He also oversees the actuarial aspects of property and aviation retrocession business in P&C operations.

Before this role, Craig worked in a variety of roles at Manulife in capital management, financial reporting, pricing, and audit.

Craig is a graduate of Western University and holds a BSc in Actuarial Science. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Colin Simpson

Director, Group CFO, Manulife

Colin Simpson is Chief Financial Officer of Manulife and a member of Manulife’s Executive Leadership Team. He is responsible for managing Manulife’s global financial affairs, including finance, accounting, capital, treasury, taxation, investor relations and financial regulation.

Prior to this appointment, Colin served as Chief Financial Officer for John Hancock, joining the company in 2022. He brings over 20 years of experience to his role, including at Aviva from 2013-2022, where he was most recently Interim Group CFO and prior served as CFO of Aviva’s Canadian division and Aviva’s Director of Investor Relations.

Previously, Colin held executive roles at Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns Investment Bank, where he was an equity analyst covering the European insurance sector. Earlier in his career, Colin held actuarial roles at the Reinsurance Group of America and Gen Re.

Colin holds a BSc in Statistics from the University of Cape Town and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA).

Svetlana Radan

Director, Chief Operating Officer, General Account Investments, Manulife

Svetlana Radan is a finance professional with 20 years of experience. She currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer, General Account Investments and is responsible for setting and executing GA’s non-investment decision strategy and operations. Prior to this role, Svetlana was accountable for the delivery and oversight of the Expense Management program for Global Wealth and Asset Management and the General Account segments globally.

Since joining Manulife in 2008 Svetlana held various roles within the company, most notably led the Liquidity and Subsidiary Management and built out Market & Liquidity risk function. Prior to Manulife, Svetlana worked in Royal Bank of Canada, Corporate Treasury and RBC Capital Markets.

Svetlana graduated summa cum laude from York University Economics and received a Masters Degree in Financial Economics from the University of Toronto. She is also a CFA Charterholder.

Geoff has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, including leadership roles in risk management, business development and client relationship management. He assumed progressively senior positions as a commercial banker with leading Canadian banks and transitioned to Barbados in 2012 as the Chief Risk Officer at a leading Caribbean commercial bank, where he successfully led several change initiatives which strengthened the risk culture and alignment with business strategies. Subsequently, Geoff was Chief Executive Officer at Barbados’ leading composite insurance company.

Geoff is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Bermuda Bankers Association, where he represents the banking industry with advocacy, education and communications aimed at a range of stakeholders.

Geoff has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto, a Masters of Business Administration degree from McGill University/Manchester Business School, and is a Chartered Director accredited by the Caribbean Governance Training Institute. Geoff is Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Turks and Caicos Islands Financial Services Commission, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of National Commercial Bank of Anguilla.  He is a past Director of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto from 2007 to 2012, where he also served on the Finance and Governance Committees of the Board.  Geoff and his wife Nicole are the proud parents of a teenage daughter, Karin.

Connie Smith is the Managing Director of Vistra Group’s operations in Barbados, acquired from Ernst & Young Caribbean in April 2007 and rebranded from Tricor as Vistra in March 2024. Before this role, Connie held the position of Partner at Ernst & Young Caribbean, spearheading the development and management of the firm's British Virgin Islands office for several years.

A Chartered Governance Professional and Fellow of The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, Connie brings extensive expertise to her current role. She also serves as Chairman of the Barbados Branch of The Chartered Governance Institute and is a distinguished member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Connie's leadership extends beyond her professional responsibilities. She has served as President of the Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) twice and continues contributing as a Director and Chair of BIBA’s Service Providers & Business Facilitation Committee. In these capacities, she actively shapes initiatives related to legislation, growth, and practice policies within the sector. Additionally, as President of BIBA, Connie has held directorial positions in key organizations such as Invest Barbados and the Barbados Private Sector Association.

Committed to fostering dialogue and progress, Connie has engaged in numerous consultations with the Government of Barbados and other stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and international rating agencies, to address critical areas such as legislative reform, policies, and procedures.

In May 2018, Connie was accredited as the Honorary Consul of Spain in Barbados and served as the Secretary of The Consular Corps of Barbados for four years. In January 2024, Connie was elected Dean of The Consular Corps of Barbados. She is also a founding member and Director of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Barbados Chapter.

In December 2020, Connie joined the Board of Directors of Grantley Adams International Airport Inc., the sole airport in Barbados and the key aviation hub of the Eastern Caribbean. She rejoined the board of Invest Barbados, the economic development agency of the government of Barbados, as an independent director in August 2023, furthering her commitment to the country's economic development. Residing in Barbados, Connie is not only a dedicated professional but also an active philanthropist, contributing to various charitable endeavours in her community.
