We operate primarily as John Hancock in the United States and Manulife elsewhere, including our headquarters in Canada and global offices across Europe and Asia. We provide financial advice, insurance, as well as wealth and asset management solutions for individuals, groups and institutions. Manulife trades as MFC on the TSX, NYSE and PSE, and under '945' on the SEHK.

To achieve our Mission, we set out our five key areas of focus, narrowing our priorities to those that will strongly position us to transform Manulife into a digital, customer-centric market leader, creating significant value for our customers, employees, and shareholders:

We are actively managing our capital to ensure we can deliver the best returns and cash generation possible, while reducing risk and volatility.

Expense efficiency

We are getting our cost structure into fighting shape and simplifying and digitizing our processes to position us for efficient growth.

Accelerating growth

We are accelerating growth in our highest potential businesses, including Asia, Global WAM, global behavioural insurance, and group benefits in Canada. 

Digital customer leader

We are putting customers first and improving how our customers interact with us to ensure we exceed their expectations and we are using digitization and innovation to do so.

Manulife Wins Cloudera Data Impact Award 

Manulife won the Cloudera Data Impact Award in the Data from Edge to AI (Artificial Intelligence) category. This award recognizes Manulife’s commitment towards becoming a customer centric industry leader, this award acknowledges the work completed on building an Enterprise Data Lake, managing customer data and collaborating with Advanced Analytics to build and improve the understanding of Manulife’s customers through an internal tool called the Customer Contacts Insight Centre.

Manulife Recognized as a Best Place to Work in Vietnam 2018

Manulife was recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in Vietnam. The company was voted number one in the insurance category and number 22 across industries. The award is based on employee satisfaction survey results from more than 600 companies in Vietnam, conducted by Anphabe and Intage Vietnam.

John Hancock Won Eight Stevie Awards in Sales and Customer Service 

John Hancock won eight Stevie awards for Sales and Customer Service, including Gold for the Front-Line Customer Service Team of the Year. The Stevie Awards for Sales and Customer Service are open to all organizations worldwide, and recognize the achievements of sales, customer service, and call center professionals.

Manulife Named One of Canada’s Best Employers

Manulife was selected as one of Canada’s Best Employers by Forbes in its annual online survey of Canadian employees. Forbes partners with market research company Statista to identify the companies liked best by employees. The list, compiled by surveying 8,000 Canadians working for businesses with at least 500 employees, ranks the 300 employers that received the most recommendations.

Manulife was listed as one of 230 global companies by Bloomberg that have demonstrated a significant commitment to transparency and workplace equality. Companies were assessed on how they promote gender equality across four distinct areas: company statistics, policies, community engagement and products and services. Read more.

Manulife Received Immigrant Inclusion Award 

The Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) presented Manulife with the Immigrant Inclusion Award in recognition of the company’s commitment to championing immigrants and creating conditions for immigrants to succeed in the workplace. With Manulife’s support, TRIEC consulted with refugee mentees and front-line sector employees to create enhanced resources for those mentoring someone from this population. Volunteers and mentors were educated on the unique barriers refugees faced to secure employment.

Manulife was recognized at the Insurance Excellence Awards organized by iMoney magazine. Manulife was awarded the Best MPF Service Provider of the Year as well as the Best Insurance Technology Innovation (Customers), Best Claims Service and Best Critical Illness Protection.

Manulife Wins Mercer Award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion 

Manulife won the Mercer Award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion at the Canadian HR Awards. This award recognizes Manulife for having diversity and inclusion at the heart of its business, and for providing programs for employees from five groups including women, members of visible minorities, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal peoples and LGBTI community.

Manulife Wins Brand of the Year Award

Manulife won the Brand of the Year award at the 2018 World Branding Awards. Winners are assessed and evaluated on brand valuation, consumer market research and public online voting. Manulife was the only winner in the Insurance – Life category from the Americas. The World Branding Forum is a registered global non-profit organization, which aims to advance the standards, skills and education of the branding community for the good of the industry and consumers.

Biometrics

Manulife is the first company in Canada to introduce voice biometrics and natural language understanding in an interactive voice response (IVR) system.

Manulife Asia launches an innovative insurance concept that rewards customers for being healthier and more active.
 

Supporting wellness with Vitality

We start a first-ever life insurance partnership between John Hancock Insurance and Vitality, the global leader in integrating wellness benefits with life insurance products.

Myanmar

After a 70-year absence, we open an office in Myanmar.

Cambodia

Our Cambodian head office opens. 


 

2004

We merge with John Hancock

It makes us the largest life insurer in Canada, second largest in North America and fifth largest in the world.

 

 

2000

$1B net income

We’re the first Canadian life insurance company to reach that milestone. 

 

 

1999

We go public

We start trading on the TSX, NYSE, SEHK and PSE – at $2.5Bm it’s the largest IPO in Canada’s history. 

 

Japan and Vietnam

Manulife is the first Canadian insurer to launch a joint venture in Japan, and the first foreign-owned insurance company to do business in Vietnam.

 

 

1996

Joining forces in Shanghai

Manulife-Sinochem is China’s first joint venture life insurance company.

 

 

1993

Manulife Bank launches

We’re the first Canadian insurance company to open a bank. 
 

 

1992

First in China

We are the first Canadian life insurance company to open an office in China (Beijing).

 

 

1985

Indonesia

A joint venture with Dharmala Group and the International Finance Corporation forms P.T. Asuransi Jiwi Dharmala Manulife.
 

 

1981

Lower premiums for non-smokers

We are one of the first insurers to offer lower rates to non-smokers.

 

 

1978

First female Director and Chair

Dr. Gail C. A. Cook-Bennett is our first female Director, and in 2008, our first female Chair of the Board.

 

 

1961

$1 billion

Our total assets reach $1 billion.

 

 

1956

Early adopters

We’re the first insurance company in Canada to embrace mainframe computer technology with the installation of the IBM 650.
 

 

1940

Insurance for diabetics

We are the first North American company to offer insurance to controlled diabetics. 

 

 

1925

New HQ

Our head office at 200 Bloor Street in Toronto officially opens.

 

 

1903

Entry into the US market

A small office in Detroit opens its doors. 

 

 

1897

We expand into Asia

The first Manulife policy is sold in Shanghai. 
 

 

1893

International expansion begins

The sale of our first policy outside Canada, in Bermuda, kicks off our international operations.

 

 

1887

The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company is founded

Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, was also our Company’s first president. His vision set us on the path for success.
