The biggest retirement expense may not be retirement itself

No more alarms and long daily commutes. More time with family. Travel. Hobbies. And a lot of side questing simply because you finally have the time. It sounds great!

But then comes the question we do not always ask: If you retired five to ten years from now, how long would your savings actually last?

Would they cover your everyday expenses, the occasional treats, and the lifestyle you have been looking forward to? What about healthcare or the kind of care you may need years down the road?

Because retirement is more than the day you stop working. The paycheck stops, too. And the years that follow can come with expenses you may not have planned for.

As we live longer, our healthcare needs can grow and everyday tasks may become harder. You may eventually need support at home or care that lasts longer than expected. These are the costs that can put pressure on even a well-planned retirement.

According to the 2026 Manulife Asia Care Survey, 82% of Filipinos worry about being able to afford future care needs, with estimated later life care costs ranging from ₱34,485 to ₱43,437 a month. At the same time, 61% want the freedom to avoid becoming a burden on others. For many Filipinos, that freedom matters. 88% say independence and financial freedom are the inheritance they most want to leave their families, while only 21% expect their children to be their primary source of care funding later in life.

That is why retirement planning needs to go beyond saving enough to leave the workforce. Think about what independence for you could look like later in life. Being able to choose the care you receive. Having the resources to manage your own expenses. Being able to make decisions without relying entirely on your children or other family members.

Manulife Retirement Plans can help you prepare for life beyond your last paycheck, so you can continue to support yourself and make your own choices as your needs change.
Because a comfortable retirement is not just about having enough money and all the time in the world. It is about having the freedom to fill those years with the life you worked so hard for.
