Joachim Wessling, age 54, Manulife’s General Manager for Emerging Markets, Asia, passed away in Hong Kong on 21 March 2020 following a road accident.

An exemplary colleague and leader, Joschi (as he is better known) led Manulife’s businesses across Southeast Asia’s emerging markets since 2017 and was a major force in transforming our operations. Key to this was the focus he brought to talent development, which has been instrumental in building winning teams across our emerging markets.

Prior to joining Manulife, Joschi had already established a reputation as a leading figure in the insurance industry, through more than 30 highly successful years across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, most recently in Indonesia.

German by birth, Joschi is survived by his wife, Steffi, and three young children, Leonie, Valentin and Matilda. He was a dear friend and loved by many across Asia and beyond. Everyone who met Joschi was struck and inspired by his enthusiasm for work and passion for life. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, Manulife invites friends and colleagues to join in donating to the Wessling family’s favoured charity, www.die-bruecke-jakarta.org, which serves to share knowledge about Indonesia and its people and to strengthen understanding between Germans and Indonesians.
