To say that Ian is active would be a massive understatement – he’s already got 19 marathons, three 100-milers, two 50-milers and a 50K race under his belt, logging thousands of miles by foot each year.
Ian’s drive to stay fit is what made John Hancock Vitality so appealing. “The program seemed like a very positive way to stay engaged with my insurance and stay healthy,” he says. “When I think about Vitality, three words come to mind: motivational, informational and rewarding. I like the way the point systems work, that there’s educational information, and that it’s easy to see your progress.”
Ian used to think he could just “run off” the calories he consumed in unhealthy foods, but thanks to the educational resources within Vitality, he’s now much more focused on making healthier food choices.
“As I spent time with the online member resources, like Health Resources, I realized I do need to look at what I eat more carefully and watch my fat and salt intake,” Ian says. “I’m not a vegetable guy, but since joining Vitality I’ve upped my vegetable intake by eating more salads at lunch. Every day, I bring carrots, some raisins and a small orange to work to snack on. Of course, I like potato chips just like everybody else, but by planning ahead, I keep myself from hitting the vending machine.”
Even when he’s unable to run due to injury, Vitality gives Ian the motivation to keep moving and remain active. “I had a hip injury this year, which really affected my ability to race competitively,” he says. “Even though I’m not able to be as active as I’d like, I still keep my steps up with walking and reach my goal of 20 points a day.”
