New AI OCR provides real time document recognition and missing document alerts, and “Question Navi” guides customers to completion by answering simple questions

Manulife Life Insurance Company (President and CEO: Ryan Charland; Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "Manulife Japan") will upgrade “Kyufukin Rakuraku Seikyu”, a service that allows customers to submit benefit claims for hospitalization, surgery, outpatient treatment, and more via the official website or smartphone (hereinafter “mobile”), starting Friday, March 13, 2026. With new AI‑powered features and a redesigned, leading-edge interface (UI), customers will be able to complete the process—from uploading required documents to submitting the claim—more quickly and seamlessly, fully online.

As a leader in life insurance, Manulife Japan is committed to continuing to build industry-best experiences for our customers. As part of this commitment, Manulife Japan is expanding its digital tools to improve the claims submission process.

Manulife Japan has been at the forefront of digital claims innovation since 2018, when it introduced the Kyufukin Rakuraku Seikyu service, marking the firm as an early industry adopter of online claims submission. Today, more than 60% of all benefit-claim submissions at Manulife Japan are completed through this service. The firm is evolving this innovative tool with the introduction of refreshed UI and an enhanced 24/7, PC- and mobile-based, fully online claims process, delivering an experience that is “faster and more intuitive for customers.” The upgrade also introduces AI‑powered optical character recognition (AI‑OCR) that identifies submitted documents in real time and alerts customers if any required documents are missing, as well as a guided question-and-answer flow that enables claims to be completed by responding to on-screen prompts.

Key Upgrade Highlights

  • Refreshed UI design: Enhanced the 24/7, PC/mobile, fully online claims experience to be “faster and more intuitive for customers.”
  • AI‑assisted camera capture: Helps customers take clearer, higher‑quality images when uploading documents.
  • “AI‑OCR”: Recognizes and classifies images of submitted documents such as hospital‑issued receipts in real time and prompts customers on the spot if any required documents are missing.
  • Guided questions: Customers can complete the claim by answering simple questions (e.g., “Yes/No”), tailored to the claim type.

Manulife Japan is advancing its digital services to provide a more seamless customer experience. These enhancements have improved convenience for customers and enabled paperless claims processing. The company remains focused on adapting to evolving customer needs and delivering services that are clear, reliable, and efficient.
